Sparkling June

Grand tasting in Budapest, 16 June

The annual display of Hungarian and international sparkling wines takes place in the glamorous 5 star hotel called Corinthia Hotel Budapest. Champagne hall is dedicated to champagnes only, samples are to be paid here. Other wines poured by the exhibitors are free for ticket holders.

Masterclasses in a brand new venue

Caviar & Bull restaurant is a brand new restaurant adjacent to Corinthia Hotel Budapest. It was opened last July by the Maltese owners of Corinthia Hotel, the chef is also from Malta, called Marvin Gauci. Right after opening Caviar & Bull has earned a respectable position on TripAdvisor, currently ranked in the top 25 restaurants. One of the masterclasses is an oyster and sparkling pairing held by Mátyás Szik, sommelier champion of Hungary (3 times). There will be a Chapmpagne prestige cuvée tasting by György Márkus champagne expert and László Bálint wine expert, another one about Somló terroir with Kreinbacher sparkling wines by Ivett Vancsik Vinoport and Borászportál editor in chief, and an exciting one with the topic of red wine in sparkling production (or the absence of red wine) by Vencel Garamvári winemaker and owner of Garamvári Winery. You can also taste Schlumberger Austrian sparkling in a mini masterclass by Holger Hügelsberger or cava, the Spanish sparkling wine by Zsolt Szeredi, owner of Vino Castillo wine store.

A great bubbly to start with

Apart from the wineries with a strong emphasis on sparkling pruduction (Kreinbacher, Garamvári) there are more and more wineries who produce one or two sparkling wines to widen their portfolios. Some of them are areated sparkling wines, but there are several méthode traditionnelle sparklings as well. Frittmann Gold is made of indigenous Ezerjó grape, it is a must to taste at the event. Koch Winery has just made its first traditional sparkling wine made of Chardonnay. Haraszthy Winery made their traditional sparkling for the first time last year: Haraszthy Öreghegy Brut is made of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Sauska makes its amazing traditional sparkling wine of grapes of Tokaj. Even their Rosé Brut is made of Furmint, Chardonnay, Hárslevelű and Pinot Noir from Tokaj. Kurt Taschner in Sopron was one of the first winemakers to make tradional sparkling wine, and his Chardonnay is a super elegant, stunning bubbly, a good start to begin your tasting adventures at the event.
Straw yellow colour with medium intensity. Subtle perlage. Lovely nose with excellent structure: ripened fruits, a touch of stone fruits, restrained yeasty character. Delicate mousse on the palate with balanced acidity.
