Debrecen is one of the largest cities in Hungary, and the Hungarian discount air company, WizzAir operates flights to Debrecen from the United Kingdom, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Germany and Sweden. With the sponsorship of Wizzair, Ikon restaurant and Baromfiudvar, the culinary festival of Debrecziner Gourmet takes place for the second time. Visitors can sample gourmet bits from some 20 of the best restaurants of the countryside.
Hortobágy: the ’puszta’ with quality meat
The focus of the festival is on local ingredients from the largest plain in Central Eastern Europe, Hungary’s first National Park called Hortobágy, which is situated near Debrecen. Native guinea fowl, grey cattle, ’racka’ sheep – they will be all interpreted by one of the creative chefs cooking at the festival.
Ikon restaurant is definitely the one in Debrecen that one must visit. Innovative cuisine based on local ingredients and a huge selection of Hungarian wines with some foreign wines as well. Try their Charolais steak matured for 6 weeks with roasted vegetables, and sample the iconic shiraz, called Phantom from Gróf Buttler Winery, Eger: great wine, great dish.
Wine and much more
The event stage will be busy with cooking shows delivered by star chefs, and the visitors can learn how to open a champagne bottle by a sabre. Divino, the wine bar chain offering Junibor (the association of young winemakers) wines with the zest of these young winemakers, while Bortársaság, one of Hungary’s most important wine merchant will provide outstanding quality wines among others from Sauska (Tokaj and Villány). There will be craft beer and ’pálinka’ of course, the local spirit.
And a last word on food: don’t miss the legendary sausage, ’debrecziner’ originating from Debrecen!
