The Best Olaszrizling again – ’Honeymoon’ on the hill

Olaszrizling (also known as Welschriesling) is the most widely planted white grape in Hungary, it is especially important around Lake Balaton. No wonder, that the winner of last year’s Winelover (an event organizing company in Hungary) Olaszrizling panel tasting was a wine from Borbély Family Winery, Badacsony region (Balaton). And what happened this year? Out of 80 wines, the jury of experts selected the very same wine to be the winner! Of course you want to know what this rarity is, and indeed it is a rarity. Borbély Nász a Bácson (literally ’honeymoon’ or ’marriage’ on Bács hill, you can apply both translations, depending on your personality…) is a limited edition single vineyard wine from vintage 2016. The grape came the 45 year old Bács vineyard, it was fermented partially in a 300 L barrel (this barrel was a marriage present given to Borbély junior) and the majority was fermented 1000 L barrels. The young wife, Barbi asked Tamás, Borbély junior to bottle the „wedding present” barrel separately, since this is the first usage of this special barrel. Only 90 bottles are left of the 400, it is available only at the estate for 15.000 HUF (45 euros), however the „older brother” of this wine, the one that came from the large barrels has just been released with great success! (In the photo Tamás Borbély can be seen with her wife, Barbi. Meanwhile the baby was born!)
