The majority of both Tokaji Aszú and sparkling wine bottles are opened around Christmas season, and this tasting on 27 December offers both. The location is the glamorous ballroom of Hotel InterContinental Budapest, and visitors will have the chance to taste more than 60 wines from 30 exhibitors. Bock Cellar and Csányi Winery from Villány, Garamvári Winery from Balatonboglár (South Balaton), Frittmann Winery from Kunság, Koch Winery from Hajós–Baja are just some of the exhibitors, and we can also meet Barta Winery, an estate that boasts both pleasures: they make Tokaji Aszú as well as méthod traditionelle sparkling wine.
Barta Öreg Király Furmint Brut 2010 truly reflects the unique terroir of ’Öreg Király’ (’Old King’ vineyard) and with its elegant bubbles and persistent aftertaste it is suitable for rare moments, important celebrations. The sparkling wine is available only in a special gift box with two other Barta Furmint wines from Öreg Király vineyard, it costs 88 euros (plus delivery). Barta Öreg Király Dűlő Aszú 2013 is another extraordinary wine: „Despite its extremely high sugar content, the wine is surprisingly balanced presumably due to the minerality given by the unique terroir. Straw yellow colour, nicely swirls in the glass. Fruity nose with citrus notes. The palate is subtle with quince and apricot. Light acidity, finesse and the complexity of great wines. A Tokaji Aszú with long ageing potential.”
