Fabulous Furmint wines in London

Avoid alliterations – says a funny collection of rules for writers, but it is hard to avoid it in case of Furmint, especially if a whole month (obviously February) is dedicated to this variety. The title is quoted from Caroline Gilby MW, a great fan of Furmint. As we posted earlier, Furmint February 2.0 will be organized in the UK by Wines of Hungary UK offering importers and retailers a chance to win a trip to Tokaj. The campaign starts on 29 January with a trade and press tasting (1 pm – 5 pm) followed by a consumer tasting (5 pm – 8 pm) at Merchant Taylor’s Hall with 35 wineries. Visitors can taste Furmint wines from Tokaj with Szepsy, Patricius, Barta, TR Tállya, Zsirai, Juliet Victor, Chateau Dereszla, Sauska, Grand Tokaj and many others, and also Furmint wines from other wine regions, like Somló (with Kolonics or Kreinbacher) or Eger (Kovács Nimród Winery). This latter winery received the most scores from Tamlyn Currin wine writer last year for a non-Tokaj wine. KNW Nagy-Eged Furmint 2015 was selected the best Furmint at VinAgora international wine competition, and Tamlyn Currin loved it a lot: „Rich, serious aromatics, unfurling lime marmalade, then toast. Very much in the vein of a GG Riesling with the same towering structure, ineffable elegance, fruit and acidity precision engineered, taut and aloof. A steely, long gaze. But there is a weight here that Riesling seldom has, a rich ballast of lime-powdered, ripe fruit that tastes both sweet and dry. Mineral intensity. Damn delicious and like a volt of energy.”
