MAN OF THE WORLD, THE VINTNER, THE PIANIST
The playful winds blowing through the vineyard and the soft piano melodies chant about mysterious histories of a yet uncompleted life.
Michael Liszkay left Hungary after his country’s revolution was brutally crushed by the all mighty Soviet Union. He settled in the Dutch city of Maastricht where he developed his skills on the piano and delved headfirst into his passion for the culinary arts. He then immigrated to Canada, where he spent several decades in British Columbia, amongst the Rocky Mountains and in Vancouver.
At the turn of the century, ripe with new experiences and re-awakened dreams, goals, ideas and ambitions, Michael’s restless spirit brought him back to his homeland. Touched by the Tuscan-like charm of the Káli Basin, he soon realized that he had arrived where he started, only to know the place for the first time. This globe-trotting man of the world found himself rooted in the picturesque Pangyér Slope, giving rise to a piece of „Hungarian Toscana”.
Tucked away just north of Lake Balaton, in an area reminiscent of the Italian countryside, lies a picturesque village, inviting all to admire its unmistakable “Needlepoint” basalt peek. This village is Monoszló. Its Mediterranean micro climate did not go unappreciated by the ancient Romans who become fascinated by this jewel box, calling it Tusculanum, or “summer retreat.” The Romans also discovered that excellent red wine could be made from the blue grapes grown on the gentle, sunbathed hillsides of the Káli Basin and especially on the Pangyér Slope. The Liszkay Winery pays homage to and revives this ancient tradition.
VINEYARD AND TERROIR
Michael Liszkay and his son Ferenc, the owners of Nobilis Monoszloien Vineyards, established their Monoszló property on the Pangyér Slope, reminiscent of their prewar aristocratic Estate. It was developed with the desire to combine the best of traditional and modern wine making methods. The 10 hectares vineyard and its 350 year old wine cellar produce high quality red wines again after an absence of 150 years in the area. The wines produced here are well noted not only in Hungary but internationally as well. They regularly excel at prestigious contests, with gold medals to show for their dedication to their craft and passion for making fine wine.
The Káli Basin, including the Pangyér Slope, was destined to produce great wines due to its excellent natural endowments. The Liszkay estate produces eight types of wine altogether, with
only one white and one rosé variant. The list of reds is comprised of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Franc Giulia, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cuvée, Merlot, and Pinot Noir. The qualities of the Pangyér Slope are well illustrated by the fact that it qualified as a first Class Cadastre Terroir with 385 cadastral points (out of the maximum of 400). On a national scale, the combined area of terroirs with more than 350 points hardly surpasses 1% of all the wine producing territory in Hungary. Perhaps nothing proves this winery’s international achievements better the various medals won by its wines. On the World Decanter’s Contest of 2011, the Liszkay Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 received a bronze medal while the Liszkay Cabernet Franc 2008 won a silver medal. The same year on the Pannon Bormustra among Hungary’s 15 very top wines, two Liszkay bottles made the cut. Discover for yourself our worldrenowned prize-winning wines, as they will most definitely up the standard of Hungarian wine making.

Liszkay Cabernet Franc 2012
The volcanic-clay soils, which officially rank among the highest in Hungary, leave behind many of the famous Hungarian wine regions, rendering a sublime mineral rich terroir. Our Cabernet Franc had a lightly Barrique barreled aging process for 18 months so it has very nice intense colour and big body with a quite big alcohol ate, but it has a nice balance. Enjoy the gentle elegantly balanced aromas with tones of vanilla, Arabic coffees and chocolate. New oak aged with smooth ripe tannins.
Liszkay Cabernet Franc Giulia 2013
The classical fermentation process in open containers was followed by 6 months aging in stainless steel tanks. Oak barrel parts were submerged in the wine, adding a light oaky taste. This wine represents the unique characteristics of the Cabernet Franc, with a youthful freshness, intensive fruity components, with a balanced dry finish.
Liszkay Cabernet Sauvignon 2012
This is the winery’s flagship wine. It was aged in oak barrels and has high color intensity and offers elegant blackcurrant, blackberry and vanilla aromas on the nose. In the mouth, it is nicely concentrated, with good definition and energy to its coffee liqueur, cherry and chocolate flavors. It is a wonderfully rich and full-bodied wine, with sturdy, ripe tannins. Our Cabernet Sauvignons are treated with the utmost care and elevated to our premium wine assortiment with lightly oak barrel aged tints. An absolute must for Cabernet Sauvignon lovers to taste and dwelve upon with a well sorted dinner menu.
Liszkay Merlot 2011
Deep dark red wine. Mediterran aromatic sensation, ripe fruit, chocolate and sweet spices. Rich complex taste with balanced structure. Slowly disappearing tannins. Long aftertaste, cacao and tabacco.
Liszkay Pinot Noir 2011
Enjoy this delicate balance of 18 months lightly Barrique barreled aging process. Conjured with the superb deep dark Rubin reflexes carried forward with the fragrances of cherry, blackberries and smooth vanilla. This extraordinary complexity harnessed by this unique terroir and our refining process produces one of the best premium wines in Hungary. Extensive airing recommended.
