The wine region is on the south of Hungary, close to the southern border of the country. The territory lies on the southern slopes of Mecsek mountain. It has a hot mediterranean climate, vines can be found on the slopes as high as 440 metres. The region has a unique grape variety called Cirfandli, which is originated in Austria, and in Hungary it is grown only in Pécs wine region and often vinified to sweet, late harvest dessert wine. The wine region has a few huge producers and several hobby winemakers.
The city of Pécs is well worth a visit, some say it is the liveliest city of Hungary with its own cultural life and buzzling city centre.

No wineries from the region have joined the hungarianwines.eu project yet.
