Tornai Juhfark bunch grape

Somló Juhfark Celebration on 22 October

Grand tasting and workshops at Tornai Winery

The smallest wine region of Hungary, the volcanic Somló is one of the top attractions for keen wine enthusiasts – the extinct volcano is the land of tiny estates and some quality larger producers. Tornai Winery hosts again the annual walk around tasting with 16 other wineries making wine of the rare and unique Juhfark variety. Plus transfer bus from Budapest, workshops and vineyard tours.

We must admit: Hungarian people are not good at planning events ahead. Tornai Juhfark celebration is one of the few exceptions – tough we have 2 months until the event, information is provided, tickets are available. Well done, Tornai team!

Walk around tasting and workshops

The October event gives a good snapshot of this rare grape variety with important, top producers like the host Tornai Winery with or the sparkling producer Kreinbacher Estate, but smaller estates will also present their Juhfark wines like Zsirai Winery (with their headquarter in Tokaj) or Csetvei Cellar based in Mór wine region. Altogether 28 Juhfark wines will be presented from 17 wineries. The tasting is a program in itself, tickets cost 8900 HUF per person.

Plus there will be a vineyard tour available with stops at several Somló wineries (with tasting, of course), a vertical tasting of Tornai’s Juhfark wines including the IWC Trophy winner wines, and the most exciting side program will presumably be a Juhfark vs World. Juhfark and indigenous varieties of the world’s great wine regions. How does the terroir affect the variety and how does the variety show the strengths of the terroir? What kind of wine is born from this? Interactive comparative tasting by Attila Fiáth.

Bus transfer is provided from Budapest and back.
